Finding Figurative Language Charts: As students read the novel, they fill out the chart with examples of figurative language they come across while reading. Students should provide the quote from the text, page numbers, type of figurative language used, meaning, and why the author included it. The figurative language chart is not specific to this particular novel and can be used with any text.

S.T.E.A.M. Activities: The S.T.E.A.M.-based activities in this product concentrate on the subjects of math, science, engineering, and the arts. Students will also plot fractal spirals, write a fictional story to describe a natural occurrence, and make an artistic cube with pictures of natural objects that follow the Fibonacci number sequence. They will design and build a mock levee, a hurricane-resistant building, and an anemometer to gauge wind speeds.
